As your organization begins the search for its LMS, you may want to use the below checklist to assist with your decision.

When I started in the eLearning business 26 years ago, LMS choices were few and far between. I could count on one hand the number of choices insitutions and organizations had for LMS offerings. In fact, my first high-ed conference appearance, I was asked by the organizers to critique the five (and only five) options available to universities at the time for their audience of eductors.

Fast forward to today...We live in a COVID-aware world where eLearning and blened learning are as pervasive or even more than face-to-face learning. With so many online courses being conducted globally, we get emails constantly on LMS options and where to start. LMS systems count in the hundreds now, and it can be overwhelming to go shopping for a new one.

That is why I have assembled a quick list for you to use as you begin your search. Keep in mind this list is not exhaustive, and there are many more factors to consider. However, the following items are a good place to start:

  • Does my business or training organization truly need an LMS? Do our courses require tracking and other benefits an LMS offers?
  • Which learners will access the training courses?
  • Are my company’s eLearning priorities defined—and can the LMS help me to meet them?
  • What is my budget?
  • Does the chosen platform offer all of the features necessary to run our courses?
  • Will an LMS integrate with our existing organization's stack and elearning development software?
  • How many users will be accessing the system?
  • Is the LMS the best choice for today and for our future needs? Is it scalable?
  • Are course development tools offered by the LMS?
  • Is the LMS cloud-based or does it require my own server to operate?
  • What kink of collaborative and conferencing (ILT) tools does it offer?
  • Can I access ongoing (free) support from the LMS provider?
  • Is it accessible and compliant?
  • Is it secure and reliable?
  • Does it have favorable reviews on sites such as TrustRadius and G2?
